Privacy Policy
flavorarchitect.dev · The University of Arizona · Nutritional Sciences & Wellness Foods Lab
Last updated: October 8, 2026
flavorarchitect.dev is an Open Educational Resource. It has no accounts, no advertising, and no tracking scripts. This policy states plainly what the tool sees when you use it, where that information goes, and how to have it removed.
Who operates this tool
flavorarchitect.dev is developed and maintained by Alan Pruitt, UA Designated Campus Colleague (DCC), The University of Arizona · Nutritional Sciences & Wellness Foods Lab, as an Open Educational Resource for non-commercial educational and research use.
Hosting, the managed database backend, and the AI model gateway are provided by Lovable, the platform this tool is built and published on. Shelf-price lookups are served by the Kroger pricing API (Fry's Food Stores). Each of these providers processes the data described below on the lab's behalf.
What the tool collects
There are no sign-ups, so the tool never asks for a name, email address, phone number, or payment detail. What it does keep is the recipe brief you type and the prototype it produces:
| Information | Why it is kept | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|
| Your recipe brief | Ingredients, dietary focus, serving context, constraints and kitchen equipment you select or type | The shared Prototype Library |
| The generated prototype | The Lab Prototype text, its formulation table, and the sensory labels the tool assigns to it | The shared Prototype Library |
| Your weekly meal plan | So the week is still there when you come back | Only this device (browser storage) |
| Your store ZIP code | To fetch shelf prices for the area you shop in | Only this device (browser storage) |
The tool sets no advertising or analytics cookies. Your hosting provider keeps standard technical logs (such as network address, browser type, and time of the request) for security and reliability of the service. These are not sold or shared for advertising.
The Prototype Library is shared and public
This is the one point to read carefully. Every prototype you generate is saved to a single shared library that anyone with the site address can browse, search, compare, and copy. It is built for open classroom and research exchange, not for private records.
FERPA: this library is not a protected record system
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA, 20 U.S.C. § 1232g and 34 CFR Part 99) protects student education records at The University of Arizona. This library is not an institutional system of record. It has no sign-in, no access controls, no directory-information option, and no arrangement that keeps posted material under the lab's direct control. No FERPA exception — school official, directory information, or studies — reaches it, so anything entered here is treated as public and permanent.
Never enter a student's name, NetID, or student ID number; a date of birth or home address; a grade, transcript, roster entry, or assignment submission tied to a student; or a disability, medication, accommodation, or IEP/504 detail. Diet and health wording is safe here only when it belongs to no identifiable person.
For class use: prototype with case studies that are not real people ("a 19-year-old endurance athlete", "Student A"), collect student work in the university's learning system where access is controlled, and obtain written consent before posting anything traceable to a student. Deleting an entry here is best-effort: the Delete control on its card, or an email to alanpruitt@arizona.edu, removes it from the library — but a copy may already have been read or saved elsewhere.
Instructors stay responsible for FERPA compliance in their own courses. If you find student information in this library, report it the same day to the address above and to your department's registrar or FERPA contact.
Because of that — and because FERPA protects student records only inside systems the university controls — do not type anything that could identify you, a student, a patient, or a client: no names, initials, contact details, student ID numbers, appointment dates, or case numbers. Health-related wording you choose as a filter — for example a diabetes or kidney-friendly constraint — is stored with the prototype. On its own it says nothing about who you are, but keep it free of anything that could be traced back to a person.
If you are an instructor using this with students, run the class with a shared browser profile or a device that is not signed into a personal account, and ask students not to enter identifying details.
What stays on your device
Your weekly meal plan and your store ZIP code are saved in your browser's own storage on the computer or phone you are using. They are never uploaded to the library and are not visible to other people or to the lab. Clearing the site's saved data in your browser — or using a private window — removes them permanently.
Where a request goes while you work
Two requests leave your browser while the tool is in use, both for the feature you asked for and nothing else:
- Recipe generation. Your brief and the current formulation are sent to the AI gateway, which returns the Lab Prototype. A second short request asks the model to label the result's textures, energy level, and convenience shortcuts so the library can be filtered by sensory fit.
- Shelf pricing. The store ZIP code you set is sent to the Kroger pricing API through a connector, and estimated prices for your list come back. A ZIP code on its own identifies an area of roughly tens of thousands of households, not you, and no name, address, or account number is included.
Estimated prices are research-grade approximations for the area you set, not a quote from a specific store.
How long information is kept and how to remove it
A prototype stays in the shared library until it is deleted. Use the Delete control on its card in the Library to remove it. Removal takes effect immediately and cannot be undone, so copy anything you want to keep first.
If you cannot find an entry, or if identifying or sensitive material was entered by mistake, email alanpruitt@arizona.edu and describe the entry (title, rough time, or ingredients are enough to locate it) and it will be removed from the library.
Students and younger users
This tool is made for higher-education and adult culinary medicine education. It is not directed at children and knowingly collects no personal information from anyone. Anyone under 13 should use it with a teacher, parent, or guardian, and no identifying details should be entered at any age.
Changes to this policy
If the tool starts storing something new or sends a request to a new service, this page is updated and its "Last updated" date changes. Material changes will be noted on the site itself rather than announced privately by email, since the tool collects no email addresses.
